Henry Edridge, A.R.A. (London 1768-1821)

Captain [later Sir William] Hoste was one of Nelson's protégés and is best known for his notable victory over a greatly superior Franco-Italian squadron off Lissa, in the Adriatic, in 1811. Born in 1780, Hoste joined the Navy in 1793 in Nelson's Agamemnon, thus beginning the two men's close friendship. Given command of the frigate Amphion on 13th October 1805, Hoste missed Trafalgar but greatly distinguished himself in the Mediterranean over the next nine years. When he engaged a superior enemy force off Lissa on 13th March 1811, he ran up his celebrated signal "Remember Nelson" to inspire the squadron as it sailed into action, roundly defeating the enemy, destroying one French ship and capturing two more. Eventually forced to return to England due to ill health, he was appointed K.C.B. in 1815 and his last command was to the yacht Royal Sovereign in 1825. Hoste died of consumption in London in December 1828, aged only 41.
