Interior of the British Museum: The main staircase at Montague House
pencil and watercolour heightened with white, on paper, unframed
12½ x 9¼ in. (31.8 x 23.5 cm.); and an unframed watercolour of the interior of the British Museum, 1838, by another hand (2)

Note du spécialiste

The interior view of the British Museum shows the main staircase of Montague House, the original home of the museum on the same site. This is probably a preliminary work for a larger watercolour by George Scharf done in 1845 - 'The Entrance Hall of the Old British Museum, Montague House' in the collection of the British Museum.
