Specialist note

Nancy Mayhew Youngman studied at the Slade School of Fine Art under Henry Tonks and Philip Wilson Steer. Although she is primarily known as a painter, she divided her time between painting and teaching and became an influential organiser of exhibitions. Youngman was a member of Artist's International Association (AIA) and chairman of the Society for Education through Art where she initiated the popular 'Pictures for Schools' exhibitions which took place annually from 1947-1969.
