THE TOP ORMOLU CIRCA 1840, THE LEGS AND MALACHITE 20TH CENTURY
The shaped top with molded edge and protruding corners, above a conforming frieze cast in deep relief with birds, beasts, putti, and mythical figures amidst scrolling foliage, the corners with a coat-of- arms with monogrammed FPO for Ferdinand Philippe of Orléans, on four pairs of square tapering supports

Specialist note

The ormolu frieze prominently displayed on the present lot was quite possibly the base for a large surtout de table or elaborate center-piece commissioned for the eldest son of King Louis-Philippe, the duc d'Orléns. Bearing the duc's monogram and cst with music-making putti and mythological beasts, the frieze resembles the ornate plinth of Claude-Aimae Chenavard and Antoine-Louis Barye's legendary surtout commissioned by the duc for the Tuileries in 1834.
