Inspired by John Neagle's iconic 1843 portrait of Henry Clay, this full-length portrait depicts The Great Compromiser gesturing toward a flag draped globe, a view of open fields extending to the ocean, and symbols of American success in trade and industry. Clay, along with Daniel Webster and John C. Calhoun, brokered important resolutions during the Nullification Crisis of 1820 and the Compromise of 1850, limiting the spread of slavery to the newly acquired western territories of California, Utah and New Mexico.
