A PAIR OF VICTORIAN SCRIMSHAW COW HORNS
NEW ZEALAND, CIRCA 1860
Decorated with military figures on horseback, figures in Victorian dress, a sailor, children, masonic and religious emblems and a Maori warrior holding aloft a rifle, the ends carved with animal heads
14½ in. (38 cm.) long (2)

Specialist note

The addition of a Maori warrior in conjunction with British soldiers and sailors in uniform of around 1860 would suggest the carver had experience of the Maori people indicating a New Zealand origin. The provenance of the lot is unknown but has been passed down generations of the same New Zealand family.
