The outline is typical for early Italian Renaissance bronze mortars. A mortar of similar outline is illustrated in J. Pope-Hennessy, Renaissance bronzes from the Samual H. Kress Collection; reliefs, plaquettes, utensils and mortars, fig. 599, no. 570. A related mortar is in the collection of the Musée Jacquemart André in Paris, inventory number 916.
