How to sell

Max Beckmann
Battenbergs (H. 96 III.B.)
drypoint, 1916, on simili Japan paper, signed in pencil, an impression of the third, final state, from the edition of forty on this paper (there were also ten impressions on Japon), published by Verlag Karl Lang, Darmstadt, 1920, probably the full sheet, a deckle edge at left, some minor creasing at the sheet edges, generally in good condition
P. 177 x 237 mm., S. 280 x 395 mm.

Specialist note

As with all of Beckmann's prints published by the Verlag Karl Lang this is very rare. Although the total edition of fifty impressions was presumably printed, the publisher Hans Theodor Joel managed to sell only very few impressions. Following his death in exile in Paris in 1936, the large remaining stock of prints stayed in the hands of Joel's widow Helga, but perished in the destruction of her home during the air raids on Cologne.
