A river landscape with a North Italian city, possibly Verona, in the distance
oil on canvas, unframed
67¾ x 49¾ in. (172.1 x 126.4 cm.)

Anonymous sale; Christie's East, New York, 26 February 1997, lot 164, where acquired by the present owner.

Specialist note

The wooden structures on the river seem to be the mills of a type used on the River Adige in Verona until the mid-20th Century. The bridge behind could be the Ponte Pietra, with the towerbells of Sant'Anastasia and the Cathedral nearby.
