Specialist note
Percier and Fontaine's 'Recueil de Décoration Intérieurs' published in Paris in 1801-2 included designs for jardinières or tables à fleurs comparable to the present example, on the basis of which the finished products were executed incorporating variations to the basic form and ormolu enrichments.
Among the most closely related examples sold at auction, a jardinière, albeit with less elaborate foliate decoration to shaft, was recently sold at Christie's, Paris, 13 April 2010, lot 267 (£34,600), while a further related example attributed to the tapissier and ébéniste Alexandre Maigret was sold, 'Le Grand Goût - A Private European Collection', Christie's, London, 17 June 2009, lot 43.
