On a circular green/black marble base
9¾ in. (24.5 cm.) high, 13¾ in. (34.7 cm.) high with base

Weinmüller auction, Munich, 28-29 October, 1970, lot 622
with Alain Moatti, Paris, 1971 and advertised in the Revue du Louvre, 21, 1971, no. 3 (and described as 'School of Fontainebleau'), c. 1600 and stated to be accompanied by a letter from W. von Bode comparing it to examples in the Louvre and in the Wallace Collection; William Mills, London.

Specialist note

The elegant modeling and detailed work on this small bronze is immediately evident upon close inspection -- and yet its authorship remains frustratingly elusive. It was included in the 1978 Giambologna exhibition as attributed by Charles Avery to Francavilla. And as Avery notes, there are similar versions, with some variations, at the Ashmolean, the Victoria and Albert Museum and formerly in the Düsseldorf Kunstmuseum and the Brinsley Ford and von Rhò collections.
