A POLYCHROME TERRACOTTA HEAD OF MOSES

Although broken off at the neck from a larger figure and therefore only a fragment, this expressive head can more than hold it own as an independant work of art. The animated expression, vivid modelling and still fresh colors all contribute to its originality. The present lot is after Michelangelo's famous marble figure of Moses for the tomb of Pope Julius II in the church of S. Pietro in Vincoli, Rome. A bronze of Michelangelo's Moses, after which the present lot is modeled, and also from the Hall Collection, is lot 350 in the present sale.

The present lot is accompanied by a thermoluminescence test from Oxford Authentication stating the terracotta was fired between 300 and 500 years ago.
