The wooden wall plaque with cut-out floral mounts centred by an enamelled panel depicting the folkloric character Ivan Tsarevitch aiming his bow, the rectangular brass panel below, with hammered edges, to hold the calendar, (calendar now absent)
14½ in. long (36.7 cm.)

Specialist note

The image refers to the legend of a sovereign prince who had three sons, the youngest named Ivan Tsarevitch. One day the ruler told his sons to shoot an arrow and in whichever court the arrow fell, there they would find a wife. Unfortunately Ivan's arrow landed in a swamp where it was caught by a frog . Ivan's father insisted he marry the frog as that was evidently his destiny but after many trials and tribulations the frog turns into the beautiful Vassilissa and they live happily ever after.
