Specialist note

The model for one of the present drawings is probably Dorothy Dene, one of Leighton's favourite models, who sat to him for some of his most important pictures, such as The Garden of Hersperides, 1892 (Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight). The second drawing, showing the draped figure seen from behind, is possibly a preliminary study for Captive Andromache, 1888 (Manchester Art Gallery).
