Oval box, all over engine-turned with diagonal bands of fish scales alternating with bands of scalloped reeding, flanked by flutes, the hinged cover and sides applied with shimmering vari-colour opalescent abalone shell and mother-of-pearl reliefs inlaid with carved hardstone and ivory detailing, the cover relief depicting an Arcadian scene with temple ruin background, the front relief carved with a shepherdess on a bridge, the reverse relief carved with a staircase, pastoral figures and a cow, the hinge invisibly incorporated in the upper end of the cover
