APPARENTLY UNMARKED, PROBABLY BALTIC OR POMERANIAN, 17TH CENTURY
Baluster and on spreading gadrooned foot, the body chased with masks connected by fruiting swags, the elongated neck engraved with a coat-of-arms, with beaded scroll handle and a grotesque mask spout, the hinged cover with pineapple finial

76 oz. (2,350 gr.)
The arms are those of Mellin, perhaps for Jürgen Mellin (1633-1713), the son of Bernd Mellin (1608-1690).

Specialist note

Originally from Mecklenburg, Jürgen Mellin began his military career in Sweden in 1649, serving in different garrisons in Finland and in the Baltic. By 1659 he became a general aide to King Karl Gustav X of Sweden. In 1681 he became Commander-in-Chief of all Swedish troops in Pomerania and in the same year moved his family home from Eastern Pomerania to Damitzow. His ascent continued and by 1688 he was Vice-Governor of Swedish Pomerania and made first a baron, in 1691 and later, in 1697, a count. He married twice, first in Reval to Anna Magdalena (1636-1690) in 1655, and had two sons and secondly, following the death of Anna to E. H. Sophie (1644-1707) who he married in Stettin.
