The first modelled with General Joubert in military uniform, on a blue-ground waisted socle inscribed Joubert. in gold between gilt band borders (chip to lower front edge, minute frit to left edge at shoulder, staining to surface and firing faults, slight wear to gilt border on foot); the second modelled with Louis-Philippe in military uniform with epaulettes and a sash, on a blue-ground waisted socle with broad gilt band borders (very small chip to edge of sash by left epaulette, hairline crack to socle)

Specialist note

General Barthélémy-Catherine Joubert (1769-1799) joined the Royal French army in 1784 and rose through the ranks rapidly in the Revolutionary Wars. He was killed while commanding the French army at the Battle of Novi in 1799.

The bust of Louis-Philippe I (1773-1850), King of the French, was based on Jean-Marie-Ferdinand Régnier's model which was exhibited at the 1817 Salon (modelled when he was still the duc d'Orléans). Régnier became head of the Department of Kilns and Pastes at Sèvres in 1825 and he made important and innovative contributions, including refinements to the firing process.
