Specialist note

Maria Theresa of Savoy, Comtesse d'Artois was raised a princess of Sardinia and of Piedmont. In 1773 she married the Comte d'Artois, later King Charles X of France (see lot 294), youngest grandson of King Louis XV of France. From 1773 until her emigration in the summer of 1789, she was the most important patron of François Dumont (B. Hofstetter, 'François Dumont, peintre de la Cour', Le Pays Lorrain, vol. 76, no. 3, July-September 1995, pp. 189-190).
