A PAIR OF GEORGE II MAHOGANY OPEN ARMCHAIRS
MID-18TH CENTURY, POSSIBLY IRISH
Each with an arched padded back and out-turned arms with scrolled and pierced supports above a padded seat covered in pale blue silk damask 'Veraseta' by Turnell & Gigon on ribbon-carved cabriole legs with claw and ball feet, the backs resupported, one rail on one chair replaced, three rails on the other chair replaced

Specialist note

Whilst there is no conclusive evidence to link these chairs to an Irish origin, the unusual ribbon-carved angle-brackets relate to the carving at the top of the legs on a mahogany side table of c.1740 illustrated in The Knight of Glin & J. Peill, Irish Furniture, New Haven and London, 2007, p. 231, no. 109. The unusual arm-support design is related to a leg pattern seen on a tea-table with Ronald Phillips Ltd., 2005 and illustrated ibid., p. 238, no. 141.
