George Howard came from an aristocratic, wealthy family. Educated at Eton and then Cambridge, he read Ruskin's Modern Painters and his early work shows a Ruskinian influence. His work in watercolour was encouraged by his friend Burne-Jones. Without the pressure of needing to earn a living he travelled abroad studying art and although his works were not for sale, he exhibited at the Grosvenor and New Galleries and at the Royal Academy, and was appointed an honourary member of the Royal Society of Painters in Water-Colours.
