Each on a square base, surmounted by a scroll and fluted plinth, the stem formed as a bacchant supporting a vine-clad canopy with musical trophies, the three-tiered lights formed as scroll and foliate branches with vine-clad sockets and ovolo waxpans, with flame-form finial, the base applied with a cartouche engraved CB, fully marked except for one finial, central tiers of branches and five sockets, stamped CHRISTOFLE

Specialist note

The model for these candelabra called 'The Laughing Bacchus,' was almost certainly designed by Alfred-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887), a leading French sculptor of the second half of the 19th century. Carrier-Belleuse worked for Christofle as a designer and modeller and for the Sèvres porcelain factory as a director of works of art.
