HM Queen Victoria instituted The Most Exalted Order of the Star of India in 1861. The dignity of Knight Grand Commander (GSCI) was conferred on Princes or Chiefs of India or upon British Subjects for important and loyal services to the Indian Empire.
The seated figure on the box crest depicts Krishna as Govind Devji, the presiding diety of the Royal Family of Jaipur. A similar box can be seen in Kuwait in the al-Sabah Collection. This luxury object was most likely commissioned to commemorate the Maharajah's investiture with the Order.
This pen box has been purchased by the present owner's family in 1974 at Meister store in Zurich.
