A PAIR OF GEORGE II GILTWOOD MIRRORS

These window-pier mirrors, with chinoiserie pagoda pediments and rustic pillars reflect the George II 'Modern'or Chinese fashion popularised by Thomas Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1754-62. A pair of oval giltwood mirrors, each surmounted with the bust of a Chinaman was supplied to William, 5th Earl of Dumfries (d. 1768) for Dumfries House, Ayrshire, by Thomas Chippendale. They were invoiced in 1759 for £36-15s (see Dumfries House, A Chippendale Commission, volume I, Christie's catalogue, 12 July 2007, pp. 90-95). A pair of girandoles, also featuring Chinese figures, supplied to Dumfries House, was invoiced by Chippendale on 5 May 1759 for £24-10. Each featured a small Chinese person standing on a balcony (ibid., pp. 210-215).
