Surmounted by a figure of Phocas, on black marble plinth
18¼ in. (46.5 cm.) high

Specialist note

The column of Phocas, at 56 feet in height, was the last monument to be erected in the Roman Forum. It was constructed of ancient fragments and was dedicated in 608 A.D. to the Byzantine emperor whose gilded statue stood on top.
