Each sentry box of typical form, the frieze applied with the badge of the Royal Lancaster Regiment above an arched panel depicting a sentry, signed 'Harry Payne/82,' one arranged as a humidor, the right-side door enclosing four drawers, the reverse with a registration kite, the other with doors enclosing two four panelled concertina photograph frames with postcards of English cathedrals, the reverse with a registration kite and maker's label for 'W Thornhill, London,' together with an early postcard of both sentry boxes
Each: 22 in. (56 cm.) high. (2)

Specialist note

Harry Payne (1858-1927) was an accomplished and prolific painter and illustrator of military subjects. A great many of his works have been reproduced as prints, engravings and postcards, all displaying a patriotism for the Empire and British military history.

Walter Thornhill and Co. are listed in the Kelly's Directory of 1890 as: 'Cutlers, Silver-smith, Dressing case, Travelling bag, Writing case, and desk maker's: Specialities, Latest Novelties for wedding presents etc... By Appointment to The Queen and their Royal Highnesses, The Prince and Princess of Wales.' Established in 1734 they were based at 144 New Bond Street and at 5-6 Little Bruton Street, London.

An almost identical sentry box arranged as a tantalus was sold Christie's New York, 21 January 1999, lot 399.
