CIRCA 1723-24, BLUE K.P.M. MARK TO UNDERSIDE OF BOX
Of elongated octagonal squat bombé form, painted with a continuous scene with two Orientals, the domed stepped cover with two vignettes flanking a octagonal knop finial, within diaper ornament and gilt band borders (chipping to footrim, some wear to gilding, one corner of cover with small restored chip)

Specialist note

The recumbent figure on the side of this sugar-box is derived from sheet 108 of Höroldt's Schulz Codex. Details of the figure and the corresponding sheet are illustrated on p. 21. It is probable that the other figure (stoking a fire) is derived (in reverse) from the figure below the recumbent figure on sheet 108 of the Schulz Codex.
