Specialist note

Born in Tournus in 1834 Benoît, dit Bénédict, Rougelet (d. 1894) studied under Duret and exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1868 onwards, winning a medal in 1893, and receiving an honorable mention at the 1889 Exposition Universelle. Similarly sized marble groups of three putti by Rougelet were sold Christie's, London, 25 May 2000, lot 336 (£23,500) and lot 337 (£32,900) and Sotheby's, London, 11 November 2008, lot 68 (£32,450).
