The present watch is number 59 of a limited edition of 150 examples in yellow gold made in 1997 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the foundation of Cartier by Louis-François Cartier.

The model is a re-edition of Cartier's famous "Driver's" wristwatch launched in the early 1930s and fitted with a LeCoultre movement. The curved case was designed to be worn on the side of the wrist to facilitate the reading of time while holding the steering wheel of a car.

For a description and illustration of the early driver's wristwatch see The Cartier Collection - Timepieces, Editions Flammarion, pp. 288 & 289.
