Note du spécialiste
The present jardinières incorporate decorative elements associated with designs by the celebrated firm of Peter and Ernst Heinrichovich Gambs, who were considered one of the pre-eminent cabinet-makers in St. Petersburg and frequently received commissions from the Imperial family. Of particular note are the scrolled supports, central stems and ormolu encadrements, all of which relate to both a wall cabinet and dressing table commissioned for the trousseaux of Empress Alexandra Fedorovna in 1840 and Duchess Olga Nikolaevna in 1845, respectively. Both examples were subsequently offered at Sotheby's, London, 18 September 2007, lot 191 and 12 June 2007, lot 341.
