Specialist note

This painting is a copy after the original by Ribera, first discovered by Prof. Benito Navarrete and published in Finaldi in 2003 (op. cit.), p. 21, under note 20. The original is now in a private collection in Madrid (oil on canvas, 55 1/8 x 74 inches). An additional studio copy recently appeared at auction with an erroneous attribution to Francesco Fracanzano (Semenzato, Venice, 17 April 2005, lot 10; oil on canvas, 59 7/8 x 79½ inches).
