The present work was made in Hokkaido for the same project as lots 160 and 162.
Nash comments on the Japanese birch wood which he used for this work, 'Hokkaido birch, which grows very slowly, has a close, silk-like grain and is surprisingly heavy - as tough as oak. This was the most rewarding wood on this project' (see N. Lynton, David Nash, London, 2007, p. 94).
