Specialist note

Another version of this composition, also dated '1659', but with minor differences (most notably the absence of the young monk in the right foreground), was sold with a full attribution to van Tilborgh at Christie's, London, 14 June 1949 (lot 51), and offered again more recently as 'Studio of Gillis van Tilborgh' at Butterfields, San Francisco, 13 November 2002 (lot 7043).
