pencil and watercolour on oatmeal paper, extended along the lower edge
13½ x 11 in. (34.3 x 27.9 cm.)

Specialist note

This work relates closely in style and subject to the watercolours published by Cox in his Treatise on Landscape Painting in 1813. The Mrs Swinbourne referred to on the fragment of the old mount, may possibly be Julia Swinburne (1796-1893) or one of her sisters Emily or Elizabeth, competent amateur painters and the sisters of Edward and Henry Swinburne, see H. Mallalieu, The Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists up to 1920, Woodbridge, 2002, vol. II, p. 206.

Widmore is one mile east of Bromley in what is now south London.
