Specialist note

The person of Florentius XI is unknown in Dutch history. It has been suggested that this dish actually portrays Floris V (1254-1296). A 17th Century portrait of Floris V by Cornelis Visscher bears similarities to the portrait on the dish.
A comparable dish with the portrait of Frederik Hendrik, Dutch stadhouder who died in 1647, is in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
