Sir Alfred James Munnings, P.R.A., R.W.S., (1878-1959)
When the wind blows cold
signed and dated 'A. J. Munnings/1910' (lower left) and inscribed 'When the wind blows cold.' (on the reverse)
watercolour and bodycolour on paper
8¼ x 10¾ in. (30 x 27.3 cm.)

Purchased from the artist by Col. F.E. Walter, Thorpe Market, Norfolk and thence by descent to the present owner.

Note du spécialiste

The present watercolour is a forerunner of the sheep pictures that Munnings executed on Exmoor, continuing his preoccupation with cold wet or snowy paintings at this time (perhaps experimenting with this cold dreary atmosphere and its muted and limited colour palette).
