Specialist note
Nissim Levy was the father of Joseph Nissim Levy (see lot 10). From Izmir, Turkey (then called Smirna) he was a philanthropist responsible for the building of the Beth Israel Synagogue, The Karatus Hospital and the Asansor. The Asansor is a lift which was built to take people from street level up a cliff to the Synagogue, and has become a national monument in Dario Morena Street, Izmir. At the top, there is a commemoration plaque, with Nissim's name inscribed.
