Each centre painted with a variety of apple on leafy stems named in black script on the reverse, one plate with Alexander Apple., the other with Calville Blanc., within gilt wells and bright-green borders variously gilt, the first with shells within heart-shaped panels divided by flowerheads and husks, the second with anthemion palmettes alternating with stylised flowers above a band of scrolls, within gilt band borders (slight scratching to centres, one with slight flake to gilt well)

Specialist note

The 'Golden' or 'Crested' Service, as it is also known, comprises 666 pieces and was a present from Tsar Nicholas I (1796-1855) to his mother Maria Feodorovna (1759-1828) on 22 July 1827 for the Palace of Pavlovsk. Only 120 plates were painted with fruit, all with differing gilt border patterns.
