Each on domed spiral fluted base with scroll border, with three scrolling arms, each terminating in a fluted socket with detachable nozzle cast as foliage, marked on foot and on branches, also with later tax marks

Dirk van de Goorberg, who was admitted to the Deflt guild of silversmiths in 1747, seems to have favoured in his work the use of typically Dutch rococo ornament. Besides the present candelabra he also produced a brazier, marked for 1748, a salver, 1753, a mustard-pot, 1777 and a tea-kettle and stand, 1778 (J. W. Fredericks, Dutch Silver, The Hague, 1952, pl. 126. vol II, p. 140, pl. 189, 190, 188 and 191 respectively) each in a similar style.

Van de Goorberg's mark also appears on a pair of two-light wall-sconces with similar sockets, wax-pans and nozzles to the present example, formerly in the collection of A. C. R. Dreesmann (Christie's Amsterdam, 16 April 2002, lot 1024) and which are further illustrated in R. Baarsen et al, Rococo in Nederland, Amsterdam, 2001, p. 163, no. 85.
