1697
Of waisted form, painted with Saint Martin on a rearing horse, a beggar at the right in wooded landscape, named for SYR·ROS·RVB· within a rectangular label below, the reverse with the crowned cypher for the Carthusian Order above the date 1697 (chipping to footrim, three hairline cracks to rim, overall glaze crazing)
12 5/8 in. (32 cm.) high

Note du spécialiste

This albarello is part of a service of drug-jars and albarelli supplied to the Carthusian monastery of San Martino in Naples. Pieces from the service bear dates from 1697 onwards. For a drug-bottle from the same monastery, see Rudolf Drey, Apothecary Jars (London, 1978), pp. 76-77, where he suggests that the set probably came from Carlo Antonio Grue's workshop.
