Lot 265 The following three lots of festive summer hangings, conceived as French tapestries wreathed in golden trompe l'oeil shell-and-flower frames, were part of a commission in 1750 from the French artist Andien de Clermont (d. 1783), by Sir Hugh Percy (born Smithson), 2nd Earl of Northumberland (later 1st Duke of Northumberland) (d.1786) and his Countess Elizabeth Percy for a parlour or pavilion at their Thames-side villa Syon House, Middlesex.

Painted with a variety of birds including a peacock, ducks and penguins in a formal garden setting centred by a fountain modelled with two putti and flanked by two fruiting trees in ornamental vases beneath rose-decoratd foliate garlands, on a chocolate brown fond, within a simulated picture frame border
10 ft. 10 in. x 15 ft. 10 in. (330 cm. x 483 cm.)
