Paul Guiragossian (Lebanese, 1926-1993)

Maternity was a favourite theme of Paul Guiragossian, and one that he revisited many times. The subject has connotations of the Madonna and Child in religious art, emphasized by the timeless traditional garb of the women in the group. The bright colours and and tight grouping demonstrate the influence of icon painting in the work of the Guiragossian, and the luminous impression given by this work is almost akin to stained glass.
