AN EARLY ENGLISH FIVE-DRAW TELESCOPE
ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN MARSHALL, CIRCA 1700
unsigned, lignum fittings and dustcap, the tubes of vellums and marked with ink lines for focus, the main tube decorated with green yellow and red/brown, tooled with Turner-motifs 28d, 18 and roll 1.
17½in. (45cm.) long unextended
Several microscopes and telescopes by John Marshall (bap.1659-1723) have been attributed to based on the study of the tooling motifs found on signed examples. That Turner-motif 18 is found on signed examples provides a strong case for attribution to Marshall; and if not to the man, certainly to his workshop.
