A STAFFORDSHIRE 'ISLE OF MAN' TEAPOT AND COVER
CIRCA 1880, BLACK PAINTED 4
Modeled as a three-legged man wearing a top hat and seated astride a tree-stump, a leg as the spout and a branch as its handle
9½ in. (24.1 cm) high (2)

Specialist note

The three legs on the gentleman's coat and in his physique mirror the triskelion based on the Isle of Man's flag (based on the coat-of-arms of the Norse King of Mann, Mangus III). The triskelion is also a sun symbol in a number of ancient civilizations.

For examples in majolica, see Karmason and Stacke, Majolica, A Complete History and Illustrated Survey, New York, 1989, p. 118.
