Circa 1878, impressed uppercase marks, listed as shape no. 1697, the model design attributed to Christopher Dresser, signed with a monogram LB for Lawrence Birks
In the Aesthetic taste, each of cylindrical form with elephant mask and fixed ring handles, finely painted and hand-tooled in white and polychrome slip with birds, butterflies and a dragonfly in flight among iris and fern, the neck and foot gilt with a fret-pattern band interrupted with bosses, raised on a Chinoiserie style pierced stand

Specialist note

Lawrence Birks is recorded at the manufactory producing masterworks in pâte-sur-pâte from 1872-1895. For a pair of vases of this form exhibited at the Paris Universelle Exposition, 1878, see J.
