Specialist note
The Counts of Egmont and Hoorn were both executed on the Grand-Place in Brussels on June 5th, 1568, for their resistance to Spanish rule and the introduction of the inquisition in Flanders, led by Cardinal Granville. Their deaths led to public protests and helped ignite the national uprising that eventually led to the independence of the Netherlands.
