Specialist note
The intriguing 'FG' stamp which appears on a group of Régence commodes has been suggested as that of François Garnier (d.1774), father of the celebrated Pierre Garnier (maître in 1742). A commode stamped 'F.G.' is discussed in B. Pallot et. al., Didier Aaron, Catalogue, Paris, 1992, no. 31, while a virtually identical commode (erroneously described as stamped 'F.C.'), featuring slight variations to the escutcheons, was sold from the Collection of the 6th Earl of Rosebery, Sotheby Parke-Bernet, Mentmore, Buckinghamshire, 18-20 May 1977, lot 415 (£18,000 with premium).
