A WILLIAM IV SATINWOOD BREAKFAST-TABLE

This parlour/central/loo/sofa-table has Apollonian palm trusses supporting a Grecian plinth-supported altar pillar, whose antique fashion derived from a tripod marble candelabrum. The pattern, which was popularised by the connoisseur Thomas Hopes, Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807 (pl.39). The pattern remained fashionable throughout George IVs reign and featured in Gillows 1822 Sketch Book (Westminster Libraries); while a suite of card-tables and Loo Table, in the Hope manner, were supplied in 1820 for Creedy Park, Devon by the London cabinet-maker John Wellsman (see Sothebys London, 7 November 1997 lot 87), However this particular example was most likely supplied by Taprell and Holland (later Holland and Son) as the construction, style and date are all consistent with that of the six proceeding lots, of which this table relates most closely to lot 367 which is constructed from an almost identical satinwood and may have been intended to be ensuite.
