A SCOTTISH REGENCY MAHOGANY SIDE TABLE

William Trotter (d.1833), Edinburgh's leading cabinet-maker during the Regency period, supplied a pair of tables almost identical to the present table for the Picture-Gallery at Paxton House, Berwickshire in 1813. Trotter's work was characterised by the use of fine quality materials and bold carving. At Paxton he created a number of pieces specifically intended to display marble tablets collected by George Home on a Grand Tour in the 1770's.
Frosterley Marble is a black limestone containing substantial quantities of white fossilized horn coral. The rock dates to the Carboniferous Period, some 325 million years ago. It was mined in the Rogerley quarry, Co. Durham.
