Specialist note
This upholstered library bergère is based on a design in Thomas King's The Modern Style of Cabinet Work Exemplified, 1829. This publication reflected the prevailing stylistic tastes in the early 19th century and contained over 72 plates for furniture designed in neat Grecian and Gothic design, which King claimed represented 'English style carefully blended with Parisian taste'. The pointed pediment toprail, carved scrollwork carving on the arms and front seatrail, as well as the foliate feet on this bergère are taken directly from King's design.
