From the 17th century onwards Table Bay became an important stop for ships travelling between Europe and China as it was half way. Several versions have been made of this view. A similar plate from the Princesshof Museum, Leeuwarden (Netherlands) is published in F. & N. Hervouët, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Decor Occidental, Paris 1986, p. 39 no.: 2.9. And one was sold at Sotheby's Amsterdam, 5 November 2003, lot 173
